Screencast: Understanding Task Dependencies, Lead and Lag

Whenever I’m planning for a project and developing a schedule, I review the relationships of tasks and make sure that they are realistic and practical. These relationships are also known as task dependencies.
Whenever I’m planning for a project and developing a schedule, I review the relationships of tasks and make sure that they are realistic and practical. These relationships are also known as task dependencies. A task dependency is the logical relationship between project tasks. For example, if there was a task called ” Scramble Eggs”, the prior task or predecessor task would be “Buy Eggs”. These tasks would have a dependency known as Finish to Start (F-S). We would have to finish or complete the task of “Buying Eggs” before we can start the “Scramble Eggs” task.

Understanding and appropriately applying the four types of task dependencies are very important in developing a realistic project schedule.

As a continuation of my “Project Planning 101” screencast, here’s a 15 minute screencast of me explaining the four types of task dependencies namely:

Finish to Start (F-S)
Start to Start (S-S)
Finish to Finish (F-F)
Start to Finish (S-F)

In addition, I also discuss how you can apply Lead and Lag as well. Enjoy!

Hope you enjoyed the presentation. Please let me know what you think.
