In project management, having a sound change control process is important to avoid scope creeps. Change control is a set of procedures that defines how changes would be addressed in a project. Changes in scope, budget, resource should be properly assessed prior to being implemented.

Though the idea is good, often times project teams rarely implement this due to the lack of automated tools to support it. Well, if you have SharePoint, your days of not implementing change control is long over. I had the opportunity to present last week at the SharePoint Technology Conference in how to build a change control system using SharePoint. Without any programming, I demonstrated how you can utilize the out of the box Three State Workflow to automate a simple change control process. For sophisticated change control processes, I also showed how you can automate this by leveraging the Workflow Designer with SharePoint Designer.
